The player's retrieving strategy and regular emotional displays on court had led some to doubt if his capacity to play at the elite level was concluded.

But the 29-year-old has implemented adjustments in the last few weeks, attempting to advance forward and play aggressively, backed up by an better serve.

The champion fought back from a deficit in the initial set against the difficult Frenchman, taking four of the concluding five exchanges to gain the advantage.

The pair traded breaks in the following set before the Frenchman, attempting for his initial ATP Tour championship, took control to force a decider.

The opponent saved 4 early-game chances in a tight third set before the champion broke to fifteen to secure the win.

Suitably, the winner clinched the win with a shot at the front of the court, with his opponent failing to control a shot after a lengthy match.
