Together Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.
Consider this a test for partners in committed relationships who appreciate scary movies: Settle in with your partner and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like typical physical horror, but within Together lies a intense examination about how we choose to love each other.
An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics
Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have stayed together for a decade. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the actors infuse a unique chemistry to their roles, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a committed partnership.
The narrative begins when Tim and Millie relocate from the metropolis to the rural area for Millie’s job. A commonly used story element, sure, but that’s primarily where the conventions conclude. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.
A Paranormal Spark
While walking near their new home, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim discover an underground cave. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity takes hold of the couple. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past typical partnership.
The whole movie is a gradually intensifying horror experience, weaving in moments of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.
Complex Characterizations
A significant portion of Together is only the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.
Conversely, Tim feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and removed from his network of friends. He is terrified of the concept of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is intensified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for mobility.
The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie never makes either of his characters the clear bad guy.
The couple confront the sort of issues that are inherent in most partnerships after ten years. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their relationship.
Allegory and Meaning
While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these anxieties of codependency and giving oneself over to a partner, the symbolism does not come across as overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in harmony.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, some couples who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them reconcile.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could act as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the ending plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your partner and state, “I understand that choice”?
Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can experience today.
Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu at present.
